Productive Diversity

چکیده
Introduction The Productive Diversity policy was launched by Paul Keating in 1992 with the objective of increasing Australian business access to, and success in trading with increasingly diverse domestic and export markets. The policy was argued as a ‘win-win’ strategy that could support the needs of Australian businesses in a global trading environment while at the same time, take advantage of Australia’s multicultural workforce – a group identified as undervalued and unappreciated for the skills and talents that came with diverse languages and understanding of international business environments. Since that time, however, adoption by Australian business has been patchy.

Impacts of plant diversity on biomass production increase through time because of species complementarity.
Accelerating rates of species extinction have prompted a growing number of researchers to manipulate the richness of various groups of organisms and examine how this aspect of diversity impacts ecological processes that control the functioning of ecosystems. We summarize the results of 44 experiments that have manipulated the richness of plants to examine how plant diversity affects the product...
متن کاملVariation in the diversity-productivity relationship in young forests of the eastern United States
The diversity-productivity relationship has not been studied as extensively in forests as in other ecosystems. We address this gap in our knowledge by examining the relationship of productivity (primarily the periodic annual increment in aboveground biomass, but also the mean annual increment) with five species diversity indices, stand, and environmental factors. We used 967 naturally regenerat...
متن کاملDiversity increases biomass production for trematode parasites in snails.
Increasing species diversity typically increases biomass in experimental assemblages. But there is uncertainty concerning the mechanisms of diversity effects and whether experimental findings are relevant to ecological process in nature. Hosts for parasites provide natural, discrete replicates of parasite assemblages. We considered how diversity affects standing-stock biomass for a highly inter...

متن کاملPhylogenetic structure of soil bacterial communities predicts ecosystem functioning.
Quantifying diversity with phylogeny-informed metrics helps understand the effects of diversity on ecosystem functioning (EF). The sign of these effects remains controversial because phylogenetic diversity and taxonomic identity may interactively influence EF. Positive relationships, traditionally attributed to complementarity effects, seem unimportant in natural soil bacterial communities. Neg...
